Saturday 18th August
Went to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class, there was only one other Adult student there plus the coach Victor, the coach said to treat it as a private tuition lesson, session fees was only 50p!
The coach was really excellent, I explained I was a judo player, he himself is a European Superheavyweight Champion at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, also a Brown Belt at Judo training with Steve Gawthorpe at his club in manchester.
He showed me 2 sweeps you can do when you are on you back in the guard and also one strangle. I hadnt seen the moves before and they were very effective, the groundwork seems to have been studied to a much greater degree than judo groundwork.
He then showed me some ways to pass the guard when you are in someone else guard(ie between the legs), and also how to position yourself to avoid being caught with and armlock or strangle from the guard. These moves were also new to me but very effective.
Then had 4 * 2 minute practices, 2 with the other student who was a blue belt, 2 with Victor.
The practice was... interesting as once Victor had you in his guard he could basically armlock or strangle you 10 different ways and transitioned from one move to another so quickly it was very hard to defend against, he was able to sweep me onto my back from his guard a couple of times. When I turned into the turtle position he was able to turn me and strangle me at will.
Very Very good, basically international standard and I cant believe this guy travels all the way from manchester to N Wales to teach a few juniors and seniors on Saturdays for 50p per person. He says he does it for the community.
It would be very very worthwhile for us as a club to attend one of his sessions, or even to pay for his travel from manchester, if he would be willing, and make it worth his while to do a session for us at our club one Saturday.
Just food for thought I definitely intend to go to his class one a month when I come up to Wales. I've got his phone number and he said to give him a ring next time I am coming up.
