Player Profile November 08 - Luke

Started judo at the age of 7 and recently took part in his first major tournament – The National Age Band event in Sheffield – finishing an impressive 5th place. Had 6 fights including meeting the eventual gold medallist but still managed to reach the bronze contest.
Although only 14, he is already over 6ft and has integrated smoothly into senior classes due to his superb attitude: likes to work hard, has fun, listens and equally important is a very good training partner. Attends Midland Cadet sessions and practices with Becky.
Other interests include being an accomplished dancer (competes and performs in shows) as well as playing wing – forward for Broadstreet Rugby Club.
Favourite technique: Left – handed Tai Otoshi

Player Of The Month January 2008 - Leighton Richards
I started Judo when I was 8 years old in the local leisure centre.
I fought for Wales from age 12 to 18 in many competitions some of my best results being
Irish Open - Gold, Welsh Open - Gold, Heart of England Championships - Gold, British National Championships - Bronze.
I have had many great experiences through judo as a junior, taking part in several of Brian Moores winter camps in Kendal Judo Club.
I took a break from judo at the age of 19 while at University and return to it until 3 years ago when I was 28.
I really enjoy the club atmosphere at Coventry Judo Club, I had a go at some competitions last year, placing seventh at the British championships
and 5th at the Heart of England at -81Kg.
My other 'interest' is Olympic Weightlifting, a sport which has 2 events, the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk.
These lifts require great core strength, explosiveness, balance and flexibility, and I believe they are the best way to increase strength for Judo.

Player Of The Month November 2007 - Derek Spencer
I started Judo way back in 1983 with a workmate who was a black belt.
I didnt keep up the Judo because my main sport then was boxing.
I started training again in 1987 but only briefly.
I have now been training regularly at judo for the last 3 years, formerly at Kenilworth and now at Coventry Judo Club.
My best achievement in Judo so far is winning the Gold medal at the Samurai "Rod Lane" event at Walsall on 7th October.
My eventual goal is to get my black belt, I really enjoy Judo!

What is your favourite throw? - Kata Guruma (standing)
What is your favourite music to train with? - The Rocky Story
What is your most memorable moment? - Getting though to the final of the VI worlds in Brazil
What is your best achievement? - Winning the world silver medal in Brazil and qualifying for Beijing VI Olympics
What are your ambitions in Judo? - Gold in London in 2012
Comment from Coventry Judo Club.
Sam has developed very quickly within the last 12 months.
Within only 6 months of starting training properly he has progressed from ungraded to 1st Dan, winning all the fights in his line up.
He has established himself as the number one in the British Visually Impaired Squad.
He is now the veteran of several international training camps, has taken 5th place at the European Championships, 2nd place at the World Championships and has qualified for the Beijing Olympics.
If Sam continues progressing at his current rate of improvement then his future as a Judo competitor looks very bright indeed.
Further update December 2008
Sam won a Bronze medal at the Beijing Paralympics.
He also won the BJA Award for most improved player.
Congratulations Sam.
Player Of The Month July 2007 - Jean-Marc
My name is Jean-marc Luisoni, I am 29 years old and have been living in England for about 6 years now.
I started Judo at the age of 7 at the Judo Club de Gerland in Lyon,France.
I got my 1st dan at the age of 18 but got severely injured the following year breaking my left knee ligaments during a practise. I stayed away from the mats for 8 years after the incident.
My main achievement during that period has been a silver medal at a regional competition and wining my place in the finals with a throw after 5 seconds in the combat.
I got introduced 3 years ago to the Coventry Judo Club by a friend who practises there and I have been training at this club since. The people there are really nice and it's just a pleasure to turn up to the sessions.
My goal now in Judo is to enjoy myself and improve my techniques and maybe go for my second dan soon.
Finally, I have to say that I have two favourite Judo players. When I was a child, I had the privilege to meet Fabien Canu and even being thrown by him. He was my hero for years. But then came David Douillet. I met him once in Paris and shook his hand. He was so impressive. He has been my favourite player since his first Olympic title and even now after being retired.
